I met Annet through a mutual friend at a birthday party. That mutual friend told both of us that we would hit it off, and we did. We became close friends and a few months later we celebrated New Years Eve together in a small cabbage in the middle of nowhere. When I see Annet it is like walking into a room of peace and serenity, one of the main reasons I wanted to know about her self-care rituals.
Was there a specific moment when you felt self-care is very important?
My life changed after a Vipassana meditation almost five years ago. Before this ten day meditation retreat I had the feeling I didn’t understand life. I had lots of questions: "Why am I on earth? Why are a lot of people I meet passers-by of the moment? Why can’t beautiful events take forever?" My head was full of questions. After the Vipassana meditation everything just fell into place. It made me aware that everything around us changes continuously. What if we can embrace this change? Without holding precious moments or without being afraid of letting go of certain people around us. To see that we are always home within ourselves.
What does taking care of yourself mean to you?
Taking care of myself means to connect to that inner space that is always there. The space in between my thoughts. The space in between my breaths. It doesn’t matter where I am. Whether I’m at work, doing sports or walking around in nature. It’s always there.
What do you do when you feel the need to take care of yourself?
When I feel disconnected it is important for me to hold still. To take time to reconnect. To do a meditation/ yin yoga, to read a beautiful book (for example Adyashanti) or to go into nature.
