Romy is the best friend of my youngest sister. I always enjoyed her positive look on the world and infectious laugh. Besides all of this she is hilarious! I admire her for following her dreams, for starting a successful company called A-Sociaal Media and staying her true self. We talked some time ago about self-care, in her private and professional life. Enjoy her words!
Romy, was there a specific moment in your life when you felt self-care is very important?
“I had an epiphany when I cancelled for the umpteenth time a date with a friend on a Friday night. I was worried that if I would go, I wouldn’t be fit the Monday after. My whole life was about being and feeling fit, by exercising and my diet. I started to realise something was wrong, I didn’t know what so I decided to see a coach.” “I created an image of being a #fitgirl and #girlboss, I mean I like to exercise and I do have my own company, I was just only occupied with keeping that image up. I learned to accept who I am instead of pretending to be somebody I am not. I am that strong young woman but I also have my vulnerabilities, I just never showed them. I thought I could be either strong and successful or vulnerable, now I know it goes hand in hand.”
What does taking care of yourself mean to you?
“Listening to my own needs: to rest and recover when I need it. I need time alone to recharge. I had to learn to share my thoughts and emotions with my friends, now I enjoy that! Listening to my needs could also mean to cancel on a date night with a friend because I need to be alone.”
“And the opposite of rest and recover: exercise! I make time for it, it makes me feel good and happy. It’s a form of mental training.”

And for you as an entrepreneur, is there anything else you do to take care of yourself?
“The company grew organically so I haven’t had super stressful times. But of course at times, it can be stressful when we have less work to do than normally. Instead of worrying about this, I use the time to work at the company instead of in the company. Entrepreneurship is also about boundaries, when I am with my friends or family my clients need to wait. That time is precious to me.”
What do you do when you feel the need to take care of yourself?
“I still find those days quite difficult, my thoughts try to take over in those moments. Thoughts about the things I ‘should’ do. I try to feel what I need in that moment, in general it starts with taking a step back and relax. I reach out to my friends, have a talk about what’s going on in my mind or to do something fun to get out of my mind.”
What is your TCOYS tip to other people?
“Talk about what is going on with you with your loved ones, show your vulnerability. Vulnerability is not a weakness, it’s very powerful.”
What is your TCOYS tip during Covid-19?
"Don't cling onto things that can't be done, focus on finding solutions and give yourself time to get used to this new situation. I also find it important to make a clear distinction between work and my time off, I don't want to spend the whole day working. And last but not least, don't push yourself in doing things because 'everybody' is learning something new."
