"Talk about your emotions"

David is an inspiring person living in Amsterdam. I met him after a group meditation on a Saturday morning and we were inspired by his energy and knowledge. He works with different organizations that organise events about consciousness and to celebrate life. Health is one of his passions. He practiced fitness for the past 12 years and now helps others get fit through outdoor sports classes, he fasts regularly and eats healthy. He loves eating certainly when shared with his friends.

What does taking care of yourself mean to you?

Self-care is a lifestyle on different levels. Its means taking sufficient rest, mentally and physically. Eating healthy is also an important part of it, to me it means to avoid processed food, eating a lot of vegetables, eggs and to drink lots of water and fresh juices. I also fast frequently. That means two days of only drinking water. It is an amazing way to get rid of toxins in your body. Besides I think it is important to dose your consumption of drugs and alcohol. Self-care also means to listen to my body, follow my intuition, listening to what my body tells me so I can set clear boundaries.

What do you do when you feel the need to take care of yourself?

I make sure my sleeping routine is on point, I would like to make at least eight hours. I love to walk long distances and do some stretching. When I need a little more self-care I avoid intense training. Social contact is very important to me, certainly in rough periods. I talk about my feelings, emotions and struggles with my friends or brother. Also, I write down all my feelings. When I am by myself I do breathing exercises who make me calm and get me in tune with my body. And when I want to express my feelings and emotions I go (ecstatic) dancing!

Was there a specific moment when you felt self-care is very important?

It are the rough periods in life like a break-up, a stressful period at work or school, during big events when being overstimulated or when having thoughts of anxiety. During those moments I know I need to take care of myself as a lifestyle in order to manage those periods more easily.

What is your TCOYS tip to other people?

I have got a few!:

  1. Look at your lifestyle and things that give or take your energy. Like things you consume (information, food etc.) and also who you spent your time with

  2. Talk about your emotions! It is so much better then keeping them inside of you

  3. Spend time in nature

  4. Get yourself a massage

  5. Spend time with your family

  6. I think it is important to have a sacred space where you can find your calm, like your parents place or to create a place at home where you feel safe.
