I met Heleen at a group meditation on a Saturday morning. Afterwards we talked about life and work and so I told her about Take Care of Your Selfie and my mission. A week later we saw each other again, when I asked how she was doing she said: "I took really good care of my selfie last week!". I thought this was amazing and asked her if I could interview her, read the first TCOYS interview and get inspired!
Was there a specific moment when you felt self-care is very important?
Yes, when the stress at work increased to a level that didn’t feel good anymore, first I thought I had to push through, but then I realised it was too much and I needed to slow down.
What does taking care of yourself mean to you?
Self-care to me means that I make honest decisions that make me happy and healthy.
How do you take care of your selfie?
I decided to work three days a week instead of five! Because of this decision I now have time and energy to paint which I love! I didn’t had any time to create due to the amount of days that I was working and the stress it gave me. Making art is a wonderful way to quiet my mind, to be in the moment and fully enjoy the art of creating. It charges my battery to the fullest. The week after I made this decision I got an opportunity to rent a studio, so I am creating art two days a week nowadays. It does mean I have less money, but I am rather poor and happy then rich and unhappy. Although! I started selling my art, so who knows what the future brings.
What is your TCOYS tip to other people?
Stay honest to yourself. Try to look honestly how you live your life and how you feel to be living that way. Make changes if you need to make any. Be afraid of change but do it anyway!
